Hooghly, 22 February (H.S.): A political controversy has erupted in Chuchura in Hooghly district, over a viral video claiming, If the BJP comes to power, the sale of fish and meat will be banned in Bengal. BJP leader Saptarishi Bandyopadhyay has filed a formal complaint at Chuchura police station. He alleged that his statement was edited and misinterpreted and circulated on social media.
The BJP leader told Hindusthan Samachar on Sunday morning that he had posted a video on social media regarding a guideline issued in Bihar regarding the sale of fish and meat, but the video was edited to promote the BJP's intention to ban fish and meat in Bengal. He also submitted screenshots of the social media accounts from which the video was allegedly circulated to the police.
Saptarishi Bandyopadhyay clarified that his statement was intended to raise public awareness about the potential health risks posed by selling fish and meat in open spaces. He said, Selling fish and meat in the open can often spread germs and cause illness. I made my point in this context, not in calling for any kind of ban.
He alleged that the Trinamool Congress misinterpreted his video and spread misinformation among the public. The BJP leader also said that the Trinamool Congress sees its political ground slipping, and hence is resorting to such misleading politics.
Currently, the police have begun investigating the matter based on the complaint. This controversy has further heated up the political atmosphere in the area.
