Kathmandu, 21 February (H.S.): ,
In Nepal's Madhesh Province, a dispute in Rautahat district's Gaur Municipality, specifically Sanghar village (Ward 6), between Hindu and Muslim communities has escalated into serious unrest, remaining unresolved even after three days.
The confrontation originated late Thursday night, February 19, 2026, during a wedding ceremony where loud music was played, coinciding with night prayers at a nearby mosque, leading to heated arguments and alleged assaults.
By Friday morning, February 20, stone-pelting erupted between both sides, intensifying tensions and spilling into surrounding areas with reports of arson and vandalism.
Observing the deteriorating law and order, the Rautahat District Administration Office imposed prohibitory orders in select areas of Gaur-6 on Saturday, February 21.
Chief District Officer Dinesh Sagar Bhusal's directive bans assemblies, processions, rallies, sit-ins, sloganeering, and similar activities until further notice, prohibiting gatherings of more than five persons and any provocative demonstrations.
Authorities have heightened security presence, deploying additional police, armed forces, and potentially the army to contain the situation, with appeals to residents to maintain peace, avoid rumors, and refrain from spreading them. Violations will attract strict legal action, as the order targets sensitive locations within Gaur Municipality to restore normalcy.
