Rahul Gandhi appeared in the Bhiwandi a Court on Saturday to furnish a new surety
in the defamation case against him by an RSS volunteer. The case was filed in
2014.
The court wanted a fresh surety to be filed as former Union Minister
Shivraj Patil who had stood surety for him died. Rajesh Kunte had initiated the
defamation case against Rahul Gandhi alleging him to have made objectionable
statement during a public rally in Sonale village in 2014. According to Kunte
Rahul had made a statement relating to involvement of RSS in Mahatma Gandhi assassination.
Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Harshavardhan Sapkal
completed the formalities as fresh security for Rahul Gandhi, following which
Gandhi was granted bail by Justice P M Kolse.
A strong security was maintained during Rahul Gandhi’s attendance to the
court. Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha activists showed black flags as he reached
the court.
Justice Kolse said that the court procedures relating to prominent
personalities should be completed without any delay as directed by the Supreme
Court.
Kunte said that Rahul Gandhi has alleged RSS of involvement in Mahatma
Gandhi’s assassination on several occasions. If he apologises publicly for his
allegations against RSS, the case can be withdrawn.
Kunte also clarified that he and his family members are associated with
RSS since childhood, and never contacted RSS higher functionaries in connection
with the case.
