15 Feb (HS): Police here attached immovable assets worth around Rs 3.5 crore on
Sunday, allegedly acquired via the unlawful sale of codeine-based cough medication,
according to police. The operation was carried out by a composite team from the
Mughalsarai police station and the Crime Branch, with Circle Officer Arun Kumar
Singh present. The Uttar Pradesh Police are investigating an unlawful network
involved in the smuggling of highly restricted codeine-laced cough syrups
throughout the state.
Swapnil,
from Krishna Nagar in the Mughalsarai district, is facing various local
prosecutions for illegally trading codeine-based cough medication, Singh added.
Separate NDPS cases have also been filed against him in Sonbhadra district,
according to the official.
During
the inquiry, authorities discovered that the accused and his family had
acquired multiple immovable properties with proceeds from the unlawful
activity. On February 11, six properties in Bechhupur and Harishankarpur under
the Mughalsarai tehsil were identified and seized custody of, he added. These
include a house in Bechhupur measuring 252.78 square meters, valued at around
Rs 95 lakh, another residential structure in the area valued at around Rs 25
lakh, residential land in Chandhasi worth about Rs 2 crore, and land measuring
144.98 square meters in Harishankarpur valued at around Rs 30 lakh, he said. On
Sunday, the officer confirmed that all identified properties had been legally
frozen.
