Kannur, 14 Feb (H.S.):A 58-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to murder his elderly mother by lifting her along with a chair and throwing her into the courtyard of their house in Palliyamoola Laksham Veedu Colony.
The accused, identified as V. Sajeevan (58), was taken into custody by the police following the shocking late-night incident on Thursday around 11 p.m. His mother, V. Shantha (88), was seated on a chair on the veranda of their home when the attack occurred.
According to police sources, Sajeevan allegedly picked up the chair with his mother still seated on it and hurled it into the courtyard. Shantha reportedly struck her head on the steps as she fell, sustaining serious injuries. She was rushed to AKG Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment. Her condition is said to be critical.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the assault was triggered by a domestic dispute. Shantha had reportedly questioned her son about not contributing money towards household expenses, which allegedly led to the violent outburst.
After the incident, Sajeevan fled the scene. However, following a search operation in the area, police managed to track him down and arrest him locally.
The arrest was carried out by Town Circle Inspector P.A. Binu Mohan. Sajeevan’s arrest was formally recorded on Friday afternoon, after which he was produced before the Kannur court. The court remanded him to judicial custody.
Police have registered a case of attempted murder and further investigation is underway. The incident has sparked concern among local residents over the rising instances of violence against elderly family members.
