Thiruvananthapuram, 14 Feb (H.S.):

Authorities have issued a high alert along the Kanyakumari coastline following a warning of the ‘Kallakkadal’ phenomenon, which is expected to trigger unusually high waves and rough sea conditions over the next 24 hours.

According to the National Centre for Ocean State Forecasting, waves ranging between 0.8 metres and 1.0 metre in height are likely to lash the coast from Neerodi to Arokiyapuram. The alert will remain in force from 5:30 pm today until 11:30 pm tomorrow. Officials have cautioned that the elevated wave activity could result in sea incursions and localized coastal flooding in vulnerable stretches.

Fisherfolk and residents living in low-lying coastal areas have been advised to remain vigilant and strictly follow instructions issued by local authorities. With the possibility of intensified sea turbulence, people residing in identified danger zones have been urged to temporarily relocate to safer areas as directed by disaster management officials.

Authorities have also strongly warned against venturing into the sea during this period. The launching of small boats and fishing vessels has been discouraged due to the heightened risk posed by strong currents and unpredictable wave surges. Fishermen are requested to suspend operations until conditions stabilize.

Tourism-related activities along beaches have been completely restricted until the warning is officially withdrawn. Visitors and local residents have been instructed to avoid beach travel, swimming, and all sea-based recreational activities. Officials emphasized that even standing close to the shoreline could be dangerous during peak wave activity.

In addition to high waves, strong winds are forecast over parts of the southeastern Bay of Bengal and the adjoining equatorial Indian Ocean. Wind speeds are expected to range between 35 and 45 kmph, occasionally gusting up to 55 kmph, accompanied by adverse weather conditions.

District authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have assured that emergency response teams are on standby. The public has been requested to rely only on official updates and avoid spreading unverified information.

The administration reiterated that strict adherence to safety advisories is crucial to prevent accidents and ensure public safety during the warning period.
