Pathanamthitta,13 Feb (H.S.):The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged gold misappropriation at the Sabarimala temple continued its scientific evidence collection for the second consecutive day on Thursday, intensifying efforts to determine the extent of the reported loss of gold from the shrine.

The sample collection is being carried out under the leadership of SIT chief SP S. Sashidharan, with technical assistance from the Gold Assessment Wing of the Legal Metrology Department. The operation began immediately after the temple opened for the Malayalam month of Kumbham poojas.

On the first day, investigators collected samples from the gold-plated structures surrounding the sanctum sanctorum (Sreekovil). The initial sample was taken from a gold sheet fixed to a rear pillar. Subsequently, the team carefully removed and examined the gold plates installed near the front entrance, including those around the Dwarapalaka sculptures. Samples were also gathered from ornamental carvings and sculpted surfaces inside the shrine premises.

Officials said more samples will be collected from additional sections around the sanctum to ensure a comprehensive scientific analysis. This marks the second time such samples are being taken from Sabarimala as part of the ongoing probe.

The investigation aims to ascertain how much gold may have been lost or diverted and to assess details such as the purity, age, and authenticity of the metal used in the temple’s gold plating. The SIT is particularly focused on establishing whether discrepancies exist between recorded inventories and the actual quantity of gold currently present.

Earlier, samples had been tested at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). However, the findings reportedly did not provide conclusive clarity, prompting the team to seek fresh testing with improved procedures.

Following directions and approval from the Kerala High Court, authorities decided to conduct a renewed scientific examination to ensure transparency and accuracy in the investigation. Temple authorities have extended cooperation to the SIT, and the sample collection is being carried out with minimal disruption to devotees during the pilgrimage season.

The probe is expected to play a crucial role in uncovering the truth behind the alleged gold loss and restoring confidence in the administration of one of India’s most revered pilgrimage centres.
