Lucknow,
09 Jan (HS): Dr. Rameez Uddin Nayak, a junior resident at King George's Medical
University (KGMU) accused of sexually exploiting and forcing an abortion on the
pretext of marriage, will have his admission cancelled and will be barred from
further studies. The KGMU administration has sent a letter to the Director
General of Medical Education (DGME) regarding this matter. This information was
provided by KGMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Sonia Nityanand at a press conference on
Friday.
However,
information about the alleged aides who protected the resident doctor in the
pathology department accused of attempted religious conversion at KGMU has not
been released. The role of two professors, who were suspected during the investigation,
has not yet been clarified by the KGMU administration, nor has it given them a
clean chit. KGMU spokesperson KK Singh stated that nothing can be said about
this matter at this time.
It
is alleged that Dr. Rameez, a resident doctor in the pathology department,
entangled a female resident doctor in a love affair. When the marriage proposal
surfaced, the accused began pressuring her to convert to Islam. When the victim
resisted, she was threatened, leading to mental distress and she attempted suicide
by consuming sleeping pills. When her condition worsened, she was admitted to a
trauma center, where she recovered after treatment.
Following
the incident, the victim filed a complaint with the KGMU administration, the
police, the Chief Minister's IGRs portal, and the State Women's Commission. The
administration and investigating agencies swung into action after the incident
came to light.
KGMU
spokesperson KK Singh stated that two committees at KGMU were investigating the
matter. The Vishaka Committee is investigating the sexual harassment
allegations, while the investigation into the conversion case has been assigned
to a seven-member committee, which includes a retired Director General of
Police.
The
Vishaka Committee's investigation report was submitted to the Vice Chancellor
on Thursday. Following the Vishaka Committee's report, KGMU Vice Chancellor
Professor Sonia Nityananda sent a letter to the Director General of Medical
Education (DGME) regarding the cancellation of Dr. Rameez's admission.
