Ranchi, 09 January (H.S.): Justice Mahesh Shridchar Sonak was sworn in Friday as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court by Governor Santosh Gangwar at a ceremonial gathering in Ranchi's Lokbhawan, marking the court's new judicial leadership.

The oath-taking unfolded in the Birsa Munda Mandap amid a distinguished assembly including Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Minister Radha Krishna Kishore, Opposition Leader Babulal Marandi, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto, fellow High Court judges, Advocate General, State Bar Council Chairman, and assorted state ministers.

Attendees extended congratulations through floral tributes, affirming broad institutional support for Sonak's tenure extending until November 28, 2026, following his transfer from the Bombay High Court.

Distinguished Legal Trajectory

Enrolled as an advocate with the Maharashtra and Goa Bar Council in October 1988, Sonak amassed extensive experience representing the central government as Additional Standing Counsel, state governments as Special Counsel, and corporations in legal capacities. His judicial acumen earned him appointment as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013.

Born on November 28, 1964, Sonak completed early education at Don Bosco High School in Panaji, Goa, followed by a BSc from Dempo College of Arts and Science, culminating in a first-class LLB from MS College of Law, Panaji.
