Bhubaneswar, 09 January (H.S.): Odisha continues to reel under an intense cold wave, with sharp dips in night temperatures across the state prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a Yellow Warning in five districts. The severe cold conditions are expected to persist till January 11 due to the continued influx of dry and cold northerly winds, IMD officials said.
The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded their coldest nights of the season. Cuttack registered a minimum temperature of 8.6 degrees Celsius, while Bhubaneswar recorded 9.4 degrees Celsius, causing residents to shiver under harsh winter conditions.
According to the IMD, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Cuttack, Khordha and Angul are under Yellow Warning for Saturday, as severe cold wave conditions are likely to prevail. Chilly winds and dense fog in several areas have further intensified public discomfort.
The state capital experienced its coldest night in 13 years, with the minimum temperature dropping below 10 degrees Celsius. A similar cold spell was last recorded in 2012, when the mercury had dipped to around 9.3 degrees Celsius.
Cold conditions are widespread across Odisha, affecting western, northern and coastal regions alike. At present, minimum temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius or below have been recorded in 24 towns across the state. The biting cold has disrupted normal life, particularly during early morning and late-night hours, with residents bracing for continued chilly conditions over the coming days.
