08 Jan (HS): Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Vijay Singh Gond, representing the Duddhi
Assembly constituency in Sonbhadra district, Uttar Pradesh, passed away on
Thursday after a prolonged illness. He was elected to the assembly seat in the
2024 assembly by-election by defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
candidate. His death is considered a major setback for the Samajwadi Party
(SP). Vijay Singh Gond, the SP MLA from Duddhi, was undergoing treatment at the
SGPGI in Lucknow. He had been ill for a long time but could not be revived. His
death was officially confirmed by Awadhnarayan Yadav, president of the
Samajwadi Party (SP) local assembly unit.

Singh Gond considered a pioneer of tribal politics from Duddhi, the 403rd and
final assembly constituency of Uttar Pradesh, has sent shockwaves throughout
Sonbhadra and surrounding areas into mourning. His political career spanned
from 1979 to 1989, when he was first elected as an MLA on a Congress Party
ticket. He subsequently earned popularity through his active involvement in
social service, earning him eight consecutive MLA re-elections. Samajwadi Party
stalwart Vijay Singh Gond championed the rights of the tribal community in the
Assembly and did commendable work in bringing the community into the
mainstream. Vijay Singh Gond's passing has deeply saddened the political,
social, and tribal communities.
