Caracas, Venezuela, 06 January (H.S.): Heavy gunfire and loud explosions were reported near Venezuela’s presidential palace, Palacio de Miraflores, in the capital Caracas, prompting authorities to significantly increase security. The incident occurred just two days after the U.S. military raid and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.

Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has since assumed interim presidential duties, and Venezuelan security forces have stated that the situation is fully under control. The United States has denied any involvement in the incident.

According to CNN, verified video footage shows anti-aircraft fire above Caracas, and another authenticated video captures the sound of gunfire in the city. A civilian confirmed hearing gunfire near Avenida Urdaneta, close to the Miraflores presidential palace.

Initial reports suggest that security forces opened fire due to a misunderstanding, with sources indicating that shots were fired after a drone was spotted above the presidential compound.Anti-aircraft fire is a defensive system designed to neutralize airborne threats such as aircraft, missiles, or drones. Its activation in this instance was reportedly a precautionary measure.

A White House official stated that the U.S. is closely monitoring the situation and reiterated that America is not involved in the incident. As of now, Venezuela’s Ministry of Information and Ministry of Foreign Affairs have not issued any official statement regarding the events.
