Kolkata, 05 January (H.S.): Panic ensued near Ahiritola Ghat in Kolkata on Sunday night when a young man jumped into the Ganges River. On information, North Port police arrived at the scene and launched a search operation, deploying divers into the river to locate the missing man. The police are questioning the man's friend who was with him at the time of the incident.

According to police sources, the missing man has been identified as Raj Kumar (approximately 35-40 years old). He was originally from Bihar and was currently living in Howrah for work. On Sunday afternoon, he arrived at Ahiritola Ghat with a friend, where the two consumed alcohol.

In the evening, Raj Kumar decided to return to Howrah via a launch from Ahiritola Ghat. He then boarded a launch with his friend. While standing on the deck of the launch, enjoying the cool breeze and the view of the Ganges, Raj suddenly jumped into the river.

In his statement to the North Port police, his friend said that Raj Kumar was in a very cheerful mood after drinking. He was talking and occasionally singing. According to the friend, it is incomprehensible why he suddenly took such a step. He told the police that Raj Kumar did not jump into the Ganges with any suicidal intent, but rather in a moment of impulsive joy.

The police have launched an investigation into the matter, and the search for the young man is ongoing. A search operation is being conducted in the Ganges with the help of divers.
