Chennai, 06 January (H.S.) : The Tamil Nadu government has announced the operation of more than 34,000 buses across the state to facilitate smooth travel for the public during the upcoming Pongal festival season.
Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar stated that the state transport corporations will run 24,478 special buses in addition to the 9,414 regular scheduled services to accommodate the heavy rush of passengers traveling to their hometowns.
This massive transport arrangement is scheduled to take place between January 12 and January 14 to ensure that commuters from Chennai and other major hubs reach their destinations without facing any inconvenience.
According to the official statement from the Transport Department, special boarding points have been established at various locations in Chennai, including the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G.R. Bus Terminus in Koyambedu and the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus. To manage the crowd effectively, the government has also introduced an online booking facility, encouraging passengers to reserve their seats in advance.
Minister Sivasankar emphasized that strict action would be taken against private omnibus operators if they are found charging exorbitant fares during the festive period. He noted that special monitoring teams have been formed to oversee the operations and ensure the safety of the travelers.
The authorities have also set up round-the-clock help desks and emergency contact numbers for the public to report any grievances or seek assistance. This comprehensive plan aims to provide a hassle-free travel experience for millions of citizens celebrating the harvest festival across the state.
