Coochbehar, 07 January (H.S.): Even though the dates for the assembly elections have not yet been announced, political activity has already intensified in West Bengal's Coochbehar district. Reports of frequent clashes between the ruling and opposition parties over maintaining political control in the area are emerging. In the latest incident, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of attacking one of its organizational meetings. However, the Trinamool Congress has completely denied these allegations.
According to the BJP, an assembly-level organizational meeting was held on Wednesday in the Petla area of Rathbari Ghat in Dinhata. Lunch was also arranged at the meeting. Allegedly, anti-social elements supported by the Trinamool Congress suddenly attacked the gathering. Plastic chairs, tables, cooking utensils, and even motorcycles and bicycles parked nearby were vandalized and damaged.
Local sources said that the clash stemmed from a power struggle between the two political parties in the area. BJP leaders claimed that attempts were made to stop the attackers, but they fled the scene.
Regarding the incident, BJP Coochbehar district president Abhijit Barman said that a few days ago, a rally by BJP leader and actor Mithun Chakraborty was successful, after which Trinamool's anti-social elements have been trying to intimidate BJP workers and supporters in the area. He alleged that the attack was pre-planned, in which chairs, tables, two motorcycles, kitchen utensils, and even the stage were destroyed.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has completely rejected the BJP's allegations. Sudhanshu Roy, the Trinamool president of Dinhata-1 block, said that his party has nothing to do with any such disturbance. He questioned, Why would we attack a BJP meeting? Why would we destroy their food and other supplies? This is all a drama staged by the BJP. He also alleged that the BJP has been making accusations against the Trinamool Congress from the very beginning and wants to stay in the limelight by making such allegations.
