Thiruvananthapuram, 26 Jan (H.S.):A young woman succumbed to her injuries after being brutally assaulted by her husband at Vilappilshala on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram late on Sunday night. The incident occurred at Chittilappara in Peyad, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The deceased has been identified as Vidhya Chandran, a native of Aruvippuram. According to police, Vidhya was severely beaten by her husband Ratheesh around 11 p.m. on Sunday. Neighbours, alerted by the commotion from the house, informed the police after hearing distressing sounds and cries for help.
When police personnel reached the spot, they found Vidhya lying in a critical condition, bearing multiple injuries consistent with a violent assault. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite intensive medical care, Vidhya succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment, police said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the assault was extremely brutal, with Vidhya allegedly subjected to repeated physical violence. The exact motive behind the attack is yet to be officially confirmed, and police are continuing their probe to ascertain the sequence of events that led to the crime.
Police sources said Ratheesh was Vidhya’s second husband. After separating from her first husband, Vidhya had been living with Ratheesh for the past two years. She is survived by two children from her earlier relationship. The children were not reportedly present at the time of the incident.
Following the incident, Ratheesh was taken into police custody for questioning. A case of murder has been registered, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation and post-mortem report.
The incident has once again raised concerns over domestic violence and the safety of women within their own homes, with residents in the area demanding strict action against the accused and stronger intervention mechanisms to prevent such tragedies.
