VS Achuthanandan

Kerala, 25 January (H.S.)

Former Chief Minister of Kerala and veteran CPI(M) leader V.S. Achuthanandan was posthumously conferred the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, placing him at the forefront of Kerala’s recipients in this year’s Padma honours announced on the eve of Republic Day.

The recognition marks a rare national tribute to a leader remembered for his uncompromising political career, personal integrity and steadfast commitment to social justice.

Achuthanandan, who served as Kerala’s Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011, rose from grassroots trade union activism to become one of the most influential mass leaders of the Left movement in the State.

Over a political career spanning more than six decades, he played a key role in land reform struggles, anti-corruption initiatives and environmental interventions.

Known for his willingness to take firm positions even against powerful interests, Achuthanandan commanded respect across party lines and remained a dominant moral voice in Kerala politics until the end of his public life.

Two other eminent personalities from Kerala were also conferred the Padma Vibhushan.

Former Supreme Court judge Justice K.T. Thomas was honoured for his outstanding contribution to the Indian judiciary. Widely respected for his independent thinking and landmark judgments, Justice Thomas is regarded as one of the most influential jurists of his generation, with a lasting impact on constitutional law and judicial accountability.

Senior journalist P. Narayanan, former editor of Janmabhumi, also received the Padma Vibhushan in recognition of his contribution to journalism, public discourse and ideological writing in Kerala.

In the Padma Bhushan category, Malayalam cinema legend Mammootty was recognised for his exceptional contribution to Indian cinema. With a career spanning over four decades and more than 400 films, Mammootty is widely regarded as one of India’s finest actors, known for his versatility and powerful screen presence. Social leader Vellapally Natesan, General Secretary of the SNDP Yogam, was also awarded the Padma Bhushan for his role in social reform, organisational leadership and efforts to advance the ideals of Sree Narayana Guru.

Several distinguished personalities from Kerala were conferred the Padma Shri. Veteran scientist A.E. Muthunayagam was honoured for his pioneering contributions to science and technology. Renowned dance teacher Kalamandalam Vimala Menon received the award for her lifelong dedication to classical arts and cultural education. Environmental activist G. Kollakkal Devaki Amma was also recognised with the Padma Shri for her sustained grassroots work in environmental protection.

The Padma honours collectively underline Kerala’s enduring contribution to India’s political, cultural, scientific and social life, celebrating individuals whose work has shaped both the State and the nation.
