New Delhi, 20 January (H.S.): Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday attributed the death of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta in Greater Noida to a profound absence of accountability in India's urban governance.

In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi stated, Roads kill, bridges kill, fires kill, water kills, pollution kills, corruption kills, apathy kills. India's urban decay stems not from shortages of money, technology, or solutions, but from a sheer lack of accountability.

Incident Details

On the night of January 16, thick fog enveloped the area as Mehta's car plunged into a water-filled vacant plot at Noida Sector-150. Trapped for several hours, he was extracted during a rescue operation but had already succumbed.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the tragedy, constituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by the Additional Director General of Police, Meerut Range. The panel includes the Meerut Divisional Commissioner and the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, directed to submit a report within five days.

The probe will ascertain which department oversaw the road and area maintenance, why remedial actions ignored known waterlogging and potholes, and which officials' negligence precipitated the mishap.
