New Delhi, 20 January (H.S.): Nitin Nabin was formally elected as the 12th national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, January 20, in a unanimous declaration by chief election officer Dr. K. Laxman at the party's Dindayal Marg headquarters at 11 a.m., with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance.
As party workers erupted in joy with drumbeats and slogans, Modi garlanded Nabin, offering congratulations and best wishes for successful leadership. Outgoing president J.P. Nadda, joined on stage by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, extended felicitations to the 45-year-old Bihar MLA.
In his address, Nadda hailed the historic moment for the world's largest political party—traced from Shyama Prasad Mukherjee's Jana Sangh through Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani, and Kushabhau Thakre. He praised Nabin as a dynamic, ideologically mature grassroots worker: a five-time MLA and former Bihar minister who served as BJP Yuva Morcha general secretary, touring nationwide, and orchestrated victories in Sikkim and Chhattisgarh.
The process followed the January 16 notification and voter list publication, with nominations solely for working president Nabin—backed by 37 valid sets—filed Monday, January 19, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., all cleared post-scrutiny. Elections in over 50 percent of 36 states (more than the required minimum) preceded the national process.
