Hooghly, 19 January (H.S.): Chuchura Trinamool Congress MLA Asit Majumdar has once again landed in controversy. On Monday, a major commotion and chaos erupted in Hooghly Sadar Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) office in his presence. Allegedly, some Trinamool Congress workers tore up Form 7 in the presence of the MLA. However, MLA Asit Majumdar denied the allegations, saying he saw nothing of the sort.
As per information, on Monday around 12 PM, Chuchura MLA Asit Majumdar arrived at Hooghly Sadar SDO office with his supporters. As soon as the MLA and his supporters reached the upper floor of the office, the atmosphere became tense, and the situation quickly spiraled out of control.
The Trinamool Congress alleged that BJP workers were misusing Form 7 to illegally remove the names of ordinary citizens from the voter list under the Special Intensive Rivision (SIR) process. MLA Asit Majumdar and Trinamool workers had gone to the SDO office to protest against this.
Allegedly, when a person was submitting Form 7 at the hearing center, the MLA and the Trinamool workers accompanying him snatched the form and tore it up. This led to widespread disorder and a tense situation inside the SDO office. It is also alleged that the police present at the scene did not intervene while the forms were being torn up and remained silent spectators.
Upon receiving information about the deteriorating situation, a large police force arrived at the SDO office and brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, state BJP secretary Dipanjan Guha, while levelling allegations, told Hindusthan Samachar, The MLA is losing the election. That's why he's tearing up Form 7. Tearing up Form 7 means the MLA has realized that the names of his fake voters are being removed from the list. He has lost his mental balance and is resorting to hooliganism with his councillors. We will not remain silent. We will strongly protest against this.
Regarding the entire incident, MLA Asit Majumdar said,
“Can people's right to vote be forcibly taken away? They are snatching away people's democratic rights. Yesterday, Sukanta Majumdar was saying that the names of 1 lakh 26 thousand voters have been removed from the list in Hooghly Lok Sabha constituency. Where did he get this information from? Are the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) his agents? We are against the forceful snatching of voting rights.”
However, when asked about the tearing of Form 7, he said, “I haven't seen anything like that.” Even after repeated questioning, he reiterated that he did not know who tore the forms.
Following the incident, BJP workers staged a sit-in protest outside the Sub-Divisional Officer's office. The BJP's protest was ongoing at the time of filing the news.
Currently, political tension is at its peak in Hooghly regarding this incident, and serious questions are being raised about the administration's role in the entire matter.
