Kozhikode, 15 Jan (H.S.):Tension prevailed on Thursday morning at the toll plaza set up at Pantiirankavu on the Vengalam–Ramanattukara stretch of National Highway 66, as Congress workers launched a protest against the commencement of toll collection.
Tolling began earlier in the day, triggering strong opposition from the local population and the district leadership of the Congress party.
The protest was led by senior Congress leaders, including the district committee president. As early as 8 a.m., party workers arrived at the toll plaza in a procession and attempted to block toll collection. Protesters tried to allow vehicles to pass through without paying the toll, leading to heated arguments and tense exchanges with toll plaza staff.
Anticipating unrest, the police had deployed a heavy security presence at the site. As the situation threatened to escalate, police intervened and arrested several Congress leaders and activists, removing them from the area to restore order. Toll operations resumed under police protection after the arrests.
Local residents and Congress leaders have alleged that toll collection should not have been initiated without completing essential supporting infrastructure. According to them, motorists are being forced to pay high toll charges despite the absence of adequate service roads, safety measures, and other promised facilities along the stretch.
The Congress district leadership had earlier announced that it would stand firmly with public sentiment against what it described as unjust and premature toll collection. Protesters also pointed out that the 28-kilometre Vengalam–Ramanattukara stretch of NH-66 reportedly has the highest toll rates in the state, adding to the financial burden on daily commuters.
Congress leaders warned that protests would continue if toll collection is not suspended until all mandatory facilities are put in place. Meanwhile, police sources said the situation remains under control, though security will continue to be maintained at the toll plaza to prevent further disruptions.
