Karbi Anglong (Assam), 14 January (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi following the resignation of Rezaul Karim, alleging that the Congress leadership failed to act decisively despite serious remarks made earlier.
Speaking after attending a programme in Baithalangso of the district where funds under the Udyamita Asoni were distributed, the Chief Minister said Rezaul Karim should have been expelled from the Congress when he allegedly made provocative remarks about turning Sivasagar into “Miya-land”.
“Gaurav Gogoi should have expelled Rezaul Karim at that time. Instead, by allowing him to resign, Gogoi has given Rezaul the opportunity to project himself as a hero,” Sarma said.
Taking a further swipe at the Congress, the Chief Minister claimed that internal support for him still exists within the party. “Even today, many people within the Congress are working in my favour,” he asserted.
The remarks come amid ongoing political sparring between the ruling BJP and the Congress in Assam over leadership, statements by party leaders and alleged ideological positions with the issue now intensifying ahead of key political developments in the state.---------------
