New Delhi, 12 January (H.S.): India's domestic stock markets staged a remarkable recovery from intraday lows on Monday, with the Sensex rebounding over 1,100 points and the Nifty soaring nearly 340 points. This robust turnaround, fueled by aggressive buying in key sectors, delivered substantial gains to investors totaling approximately ₹1.22 lakh crore.

Intraday Volatility and Session Close

Trading commenced weakly, with persistent pressure dominating the morning session. Post-noon around 12 p.m., both benchmarks reversed sharply amid renewed buying momentum. The Sensex concluded 0.36% higher at 83,878.17, while the Nifty settled 0.42% up at 25,790.25.

The BSE Sensex opened 140.93 points lower at 83,435.31, briefly climbing 180 points to 83,617.53 on initial purchases before selling pressure dragged it down 715.17 points to 82,861.07 by late morning.

A midday buying spree propelled it 1,101.26 points from lows, peaking near session end before a minor slip-off from highs.Similarly, the NSE Nifty started 14.25 points down at 25,669.05, touched 25,700.95 in green territory, then fell 209.90 points to 25,473.40 amid sustained selling.

Late recovery lifted it 339.75 points from lows to 25,813.15, closing 106.95 points ahead after intra-day settlement adjustments.

Sectoral Performance and Broader Market Trends

Sustained buying propelled metal, oil & gas, energy, banking, and consumer durables sectors higher throughout the day. FMCG and public sector enterprise indices also closed firm. Conversely, automobile, IT, capital goods, pharmaceutical, realty, media, and tech indices ended weaker under selling pressure.

Broader markets faced headwinds: BSE Midcap index declined 0.41%, while Smallcap shed 0.68%. On BSE, 4,485 shares saw active trading—1,570 advanced, 2,720 declined, and 195 remained unchanged. NSE traded 2,910 stocks, with 1,044 gainers and 1,866 losers. Among Sensex's 30 constituents, 25 rose and 5 fell; Nifty's 50 saw 39 advances and 11 declines.

Investor Wealth Boost and Market Capitalization

Market resilience boosted investor wealth by over ₹1 lakh crore. BSE-listed firms' market capitalization rose to ₹468.96 lakh crore (provisional) from ₹467.74 lakh crore on Friday, yielding ₹1.22 lakh crore in gains.

Top Gainers and Losers

Leading gainers included Coal India (+3.33%), Tata Steel (+2.71%), Asian Paints (+2.51%), Hindalco Industries (+2.13%), and Trent Ltd (+2.10%).

Top losers were Infosys (-1.13%), TMPV (-1.02%), Eicher Motors (-0.95%), Bajaj Finance (-0.80%), and Bajaj Auto (-0.75%).
