Shillong, 04 August (HS): A tragic road mishap on the Shillong-Dawki highway in East Khasi Hills district claimed three lives, while two others remained untraceable after a vehicle fell into a 70-foot-deep gorge near Rngain around 7 PM on Sunday, police reported on Monday.

The ill-fated car, en route from Shillong to Pynursla, veered off the road when the driver apparently lost control while navigating a notoriously hazardous stretch marked by sharp curves and poor visibility.

Authorities believe five individuals, including a pregnant woman, were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident. Following an extensive search operation, rescue teams managed to retrieve the bodies of a man, a woman, and a minor. Efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining two occupants, police confirmed.

Construction activity has been in progress along this highway since 2023, yet locals express growing concern over safety conditions. “There are no guardrails, no signage and the fog reduces visibility to almost nothing. This road has become a death trap,” said a resident familiar with the area.
