New Delhi, May 23 (HS): The Delhi High Court has ordered convict Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar to surrender immediately in connection with the 1993 Delhi bombing case, which resulted in the deaths of 9 people and injuries to 31 others. The bench, led by Justice Girish Kathpalia, stated that Bhullar's treatment in prison is possible and also of good quality.
Bhullar was arrested in 1995. In August 2001, a special TADA court sentenced him to death. In 2014, the Supreme Court commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment.
Bhullar’s parole was set to end today. He had requested an extension of his parole period, claiming that he has developed schizophrenia and is undergoing treatment. In today's hearing, Bhullar's lawyer presented some arguments, after which the court asked him to surrender. Following this, Bhullar's lawyer said that they would withdraw the petition and surrender in jail today.
During the hearing, the Advocate representing Bhullar stated that he had never been in a barrack after being taken into custody; he remained in the hospital. He continually reported to the prison every week from the jail hospital to register his presence. Bhullar's lawyer noted that he has been in jail for 30 years and has never violated any conditions of his parole.
Bhullar, a terrorist of the Khalistan Liberation Force, is guilty of the September 1993 Delhi bomb blast.
