Commission formed to investigate Manipur violence gets six more months

Delhi, 20 May (H.S.): The commission established to investigate the violence in Manipur has been given an additional six months. Now, the commission can submit its report on the ethnic conflict that arose between the Meitei and Kuki communities by November 20. Previously, the commission was granted a six-month extension in November.

According to a notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the deadline for the report of the inquiry commission, which was set up on June 4, 2023, to investigate the violence in Manipur, has been extended. A three-member commission was formed for the investigation. The commission is being led by Ajay Lamba, the former Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court. The other two members are retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS officer Alok Prabhakar.

It is worth noting that violence erupted on May 3, 2023, following an order from the Manipur High Court. The court's decision recommended granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Meitei community. In this ethnic violence, 258 people lost their lives by November 2024, and more than 60,000 people were displaced.
