Prayagraj, 14 May (HS): On the auspicious occasion of Buddha
Purnima, the grand statue unveiling ceremony of the trinity of medical science
- Bhagwan Dhanvantari, Acharya Sushrut and Acharya Charak - was held in the
premises of Motilal Nehru Medical College, Prayagraj. This historic event was
organized to commemorate the foundation day of the college, in which tribute
was paid to the ancient medical tradition of India.
On
this occasion, former Head of Department, Department of Pediatrics, Prof. Rajiv
Sharan was present as the chief guest. He duly unveiled all the three statues
and offered prayers. In the program, Principal Prof. Vatsala Mishra welcomed
the chief guest by presenting a flower bouquet and expressed gratitude for his
arrival.
Triveni
of medical knowledge – an inspiring symbol: Program coordinator and
Pharmacology Department Head Prof. Rakesh Chandra Chaurasia said that this is
the only government medical college in Uttar Pradesh, where the statues of the
three greatest medical acharyas have been installed together. Just like the
Triveni of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati exists in Prayagraj, similarly this
campus has also become a symbol of the Triveni of medical knowledge.
Dhanvantri,
Sushruta and Charak – pillars of Indian medical tradition: The statue of Lord
Dhanvantri installed in the central garden of the college has four arms, which
hold Amrit Kalash, Ayurveda Shastra, herbs, conch and blessing mudra
respectively. Lord Dhanvantri, born from the churning of the ocean, is
considered the originator of Ayurveda. His birth anniversary is celebrated
every year as 'Dhanteras'.
The
statue of Acharya Sushrut, who is considered the father of plastic surgery in
the world, has also become the pride of the campus. He gave a new perspective
to the medical world by successfully reconstructing the organs of injured
soldiers during wars. In honor of his scholarship, his statues have been
installed in many prestigious institutions of the world.
The
third statue is of Acharya Charak, who is considered the father of Indian
medicine. He linked medical science with ethics and code of conduct. The
Charak oath propounded by him is given to every medical student
even today, so that they can perform their duties faithfully.
Three
gates - named after the three rivers of Prayag: Prof. Rakesh Chaurasia said
that in view of Maha Kumbh 2025, the three main gates of the medical college
have been named Ganga Dwar, Yamuna Dwar and Saraswati Dwar respectively. This
naming is also being seen as a symbol of environmental consciousness, cultural
pride and women's respect.
A
cultural and educational heritage: The installation of these trinity statues of
medicine is not just a religious or symbolic act but a source of inspiration
and value education for future doctors. This initiative gives Motilal Nehru
Medical College a unique identity across the country.
