New Delhi, May 14 (HS): The Supreme Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to cover the education expenses of a Muslim student who was beaten in a school in Muzaffarnagar in 2023. On Wednesday, a bench headed by Justice Surya Kant stated that while the state government may ask the relevant school to bear the costs, the primary responsibility for funding the student’s education will rest with the UP government.

In fact, Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, filed a petition demanding action against the teacher who incited other students to slap the Muslim student. This incident occurred on September 25, 2023. The Supreme Court expressed serious concern over the incident of the child being slapped. The court stated that violence against a child in a school on communal grounds is extremely wrong and that the incident should have shaken the conscience of the government.

Tushar Gandhi's petition referenced a viral video of the incident and sought directions for the police to file an FIR and conduct an investigation. The petition also requested a time-bound and independent investigation into the matter. There was significant uproar following this incident, and the school in Muzaffarnagar was sealed afterward.
