New Delhi, May 14 (H.S.): Justice B.R. Gavai, after taking the oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of the country on Wednesday, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar at the Supreme Court. He was sworn in as Chief Justice by President Droupadi Murmu today.
Chief Justice B.R. Gavai's term will end on November 23. Justice Gavai became Chief Justice after Justice Sanjeev Khanna's retirement. He began practicing law on March 16, 1985, and was appointed as the Additional Public Prosecutor at the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court in August 1992. Later, in January 2000, he was appointed as a Public Prosecutor.
Justice Gavai was appointed as a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court on November 12, 2005. He became a judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. Over the past six years, Justice Gavai has been part of 700 benches in the Supreme Court and has authored around 300 judgments, including several constitutional bench decisions.
