New Delhi, May 13 (HS): The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Uttarakhand government while hearing a contempt petition filed against the demolition of a dargah in Dehradun. The bench, headed by Justice B.R. Gavai, ordered the issuance of the notice. The next hearing in the case will be on May 15.
During the hearing, Senior Advocafe Kapil Sibal, representing the petitioners, stated that this dargah was registered as waqf property by the Sunni Central Waqf Board, Lucknow, in 1982. He contended that the dargah was demolished without any prior notice. He emphasized that this dargah has been undisputed waqf property for over 150 years and holds significant religious importance.
The petition mentioned that despite the assurance given in the Supreme Court during the hearings on a petition challenging the Waqf Amendment Act, the dargah was demolished on the night of April 25 and 26 without any notice. The petition referenced a statement made by the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, which indicated that the state government would investigate 5,700 waqf properties and their records.
