New Delhi, May 13 (HS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a review meeting on Tuesday in New Delhi with Puducherry's Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan to assess the implementation of three new criminal laws in the Union Territory. The meeting reviewed the implementation of various new provisions related to police, prisons, courts, prosecution, and forensic services and their current status.
The meeting included Puducherry's Home Minister, the Union Home Secretary, the Chief Secretary, and the Director General of Police, along with the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), the Director of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), and other senior officials from the Home Ministry and Puducherry administration.
In his address, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Puducherry has made good progress in implementing the three new criminal laws. The Home Minister stressed ensuring the prompt implementation of these new criminal laws.
The Union Home Minister mentioned that First Information Reports (FIRs) in Puducherry should be registered in the Tamil language, and arrangements should be made to provide these in other languages as needed. He emphasized that the fingerprints of all arrested criminals should be registered under NAFFIS for better utilization of the database. He also stated that the right to provide legal advice in any case should rest solely with the Director of Prosecution (DoP). The Home Minister asserted that provisions such as e-summons, e-evidence, justice delivery, and forensics should be fully implemented as soon as possible.
Amit Shah concluded that the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Puducherry should review the progress of the implementation of the new criminal laws weekly, the Home Minister every 15 days, and the Lieutenant Governor monthly.
