Shimla, April 28 (HS): Today, Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh experienced mild earthquake tremors at 5:41 AM, measuring 2.7 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was identified at a depth of five kilometers, with coordinates of 32.79°N and 76.20°E. Fortunately, there were no reports of casualties or property damage, as stated by an official from the state disaster management authority, who noted the earthquake's low intensity.
Residents became alert upon feeling the tremors, but normalcy was quickly restored. Himachal Pradesh is known for its seismic vulnerability, predominantly falling within zones 4 and 5, frequently experiencing light tremors across districts like Chamba, Kangra, and Shimla.
The history of devastating earthquakes is a cause for concern, notably the 1905 earthquake that claimed over 10,000 lives in the region. The disaster management authority is proactively raising awareness about earthquake safety and conducting mock drills in schools and public venues.
Although recent quakes in the area have registered between 2 and 4 on the Richter scale without major damage, the recurring tremors continue to evoke anxiety among locals.
