Islamabad, April 24 (HS): The announcement of diplomatic punitive measures by New Delhi in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, has deeply unsettled the federal government of Pakistan. The most significant of these measures is the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, which has been in effect between the two countries since 1960. Following New Delhi's announcement, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif hastily convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC). This meeting is set to begin this morning.
According to Sources , Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated late at night that the meeting would include the Prime Minister, key cabinet members, military chiefs, and intelligence heads. The newspaper reported that India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced five significant measures in New Delhi yesterday, which he described as a decisive response to cross-border terrorism. The immediate suspension of the Indus Water Treaty was the most important. Misri stated that the 1960 Indus Water Treaty would remain suspended until Pakistan renounces its support for cross-border terrorism in a credible and irreversible manner. Furthermore, he directly linked the Pahalgam attack to Pakistan.
According to Reports, in response to New Delhi's allegations, Islamabad expressed concern over the loss of life and property in the Pahalgam attack and expressed condolences to the victims' families. However, Pakistani officials did not comment on New Delhi's accusations.
