New Delhi, 2 April (H.S.): Union home minister Amit Shah stated on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is addressing the desires of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad concerning the Waqf bill, criticizing the Opposition for their inaction.

He referenced Lalu Yadav's Parliament speech, which expressed support for the government's amendment bill, highlighting issues of land grabbing by Waqf Board members. Yadav urged the UPA II government to implement stricter laws in the future while expressing backing for the proposed amendments.

The Lok Sabha session began dramatically as Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju presented the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi criticized the NDA government, claiming the bill undermines the constitution, disparages minority communities, and fosters societal division. He highlighted issues like restricting namaz on roads and questioned the representation of minority MPs. Rijiju defended the bill, asserting it does not interfere with religious practices or mosque management. Additionally, the Rajya Sabha adjourned after passing the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, during an opposition walkout.
