“Met Olympic medalist and noted athlete, Karnam Malleswari in Yamunanagar yesterday. India is proud of her success as a sportswoman. Equally commendable is her effort to mentor young athletes.”
Karnam Malleswari, the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal, achieved this historic feat at the Sydney 2000 Olympics by lifting a total of 240kg (110kg in the snatch and 130kg in clean and jerk) to secure a bronze medal. Her remarkable achievement made her a national icon, earning the nickname 'The Iron Lady.' She emphasizes that the medal belongs not just to her, but to the entire country. Born in Voosavanipeta, Andhra Pradesh, Malleswari began training at 12 and quickly found success. She won her first world championship title in 1994, followed by another in 1995, with a third-place finish in 1993 and 1996.
