Chennai, 1 April (H.S.) : In a show of solidarity, fishermen from across Tamil Nadu staged a one-day strike and protested at sea today, demanding the immediate resumption of stalled groynes construction works along the state's coastline.
The protest, which saw hundreds of fishing boats gather at the sea, was called by various fishermen associations to highlight the plight of coastal communities affected by erosion and tidal waves.
The groynes construction works have been stalled for months, leaving our homes and livelihoods vulnerable to the mercy of the sea, said S. Xavier, a fishermen leader from Rameswaram. We urge the state government to take immediate action and complete the works to safeguard our communities.
The stalled groynes construction works have been a contentious issue in the state, with fishermen associations accusing the government of dragging its feet on the project.
The protest ended peacefully, with fishermen leaders submitting a memorandum to the state government, reiterating their demands.
