Chennai, 1 April (H.S.) : A notorious history-sheeter was shot dead in a police encounter in Madurai's Thirunagar area early Monday . The deceased, identified as S. Senthil (35), had a long criminal record and was wanted in connection with several cases, including murder and robbery.

According to police sources, Senthil was involved in a series of crimes in Madurai and surrounding areas, and had been evading arrest for several months. A special team was formed to track him down, and a tip-off led the police to Thirunagar, where Senthil was hiding.

As the police team approached him, Senthil allegedly opened fire, prompting the police to retaliate. Senthil suffered bullet injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.

The police have recovered a pistol and several rounds of ammunition from the encounter site. An investigation is underway to verify the circumstances surrounding the encounter.

This incident marks the second police encounter in Madurai in recent months, highlighting the ongoing efforts of the police to crack down on organized crime in the region.
