Delhi, 28 March (H.S.): The Supreme Court is set to hear a plea on Friday demanding that the Delhi Police take immediate action and conduct a thorough investigation into the discovery of a large amount of burnt cash at the bungalow of Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court.
The case was brought to the attention of the court by advocate Mathews J. Nedumpara, who requested an urgent listing of the matter. However, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna declined to give an out-of-turn hearing and advised Nedumpara not to make public statements.
The petition raises questions about why no FIR was registered on the day that the incident occurred and why it took almost a week for the public to be informed about it. It also questions why no arrests were made and why the money was not seized, suggesting the possibility of a cover-up.
The petition further raises doubts about Justice Varma's explanation that the money did not belong to him and calls for an FIR to be filed even if it is belated, as it is necessary to uncover potential corruption in the judicial system.
