Chennai, 25 March (H.S.): In a dramatic turn of events, a suspect in a cop murder case was shot by police while attempting to escape from custody in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district.
The incident occurred when the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Sivakumar, was being transported by police to a court in Tirunelveli. As the police vehicle stopped at a junction, Sivakumar allegedly attempted to flee, prompting the police to open fire.
Sivakumar was hit by a bullet in his leg and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition is reported to be stable.
The police have stated that Sivakumar was a key suspect in the murder of a police constable, who was killed in a shootout with a gang of robbers in February.
The incident has raised questions about police procedures and the use of force against suspects in custody. The Tamil Nadu police have ordered an inquiry into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
