Silchar (Assam), 18 March (HS): Tensions between the Bengali and Assamese language communities in Assam have given way to mutual respect, according to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. He attributed this shift to infrastructure development and the recognition of both languages as classical languages.

Speaking at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Higher Secondary School's anniversary event in Silchar on Tuesday, Sarma recalled a time when competition existed between the two linguistic groups. Earlier, there was competition between Bengali and Assamese due to various reasons, he said. Now, a sense of mutual respect has emerged, allowing both communities to use their languages freely.

He credited post-2014 infrastructure projects—such as broad-gauge railway conversions and improved road connectivity—for strengthening ties between Assam’s Barak and Brahmaputra valleys. Additionally, he highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to grant classical language status to both Assamese and Bengali, saying it had transformed linguistic discussions and reduced rivalry.

Sarma had previously emphasized this shift in a tweet, stating, Gone are the days of discontent between the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys. Our government has ensured equal growth in both regions, giving equal respect to both Assamese and Bangla.

At the event, the Chief Minister also announced new educational initiatives, including courses in artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and industrial skills, reaffirming his government’s commitment to modernising education.
