New Delhi, March 14 (H.S.) : The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has organized safety measures for fishermen attending the annual Katchatheevu Festival, which takes place on March 14 and 15 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.
This year, 3,421 pilgrims will travel to the Sri Lankan island of Katchatheevu. The ICG will ensure their safe passage to the island and back, coordinating with the Sri Lankan Navy.
Commodore B Vinay Kumar from ICG Station Mandapam emphasized the security arrangements, including mandatory life jackets for all pilgrims. Deputy Commandant Abhishek Yadav confirmed that safety measures include two ships, Charlie 431 and 431, an ACV Dornier, and a fast patrol vessel, all prepared for a smooth transfer of the pilgrims.
The ICG has also stocked extra life jackets and medical facilities onboard to manage any emergencies. The number of pilgrims has increased from around 2,700 in 2023 to 3,421 this year. The Katchatheevu Festival, centered around a church dedicated to St. Anthony, allows Indian fishermen to visit without passports, with celebrations shared between Indian and Sri Lankan communities.
