Hooghly, 7 February (H.S.):

A youth has been accused of extorting money and gold ornaments from a girl in Singur of Hooghly district by threatening to post her intimate pictures on social media. The youth allegedly extorted ₹50,000 and then gold ornaments worth about one and a half lakh rupees from the girl by threatening her.

According to police sources, the youth's house is in Singur while the girl's house is in Jangipara. The youth was working in gold and silver in Dubai and he met the girl a few months ago through social media, after which their relationship grew.

The girl alleged that the youth took her intimate picture and threatened to post it on social media. The youth has denied all the allegations against him and said that the girl has trapped him.

An officer of Hooghly District Police (Rural) said that the girl called the youth to meet in Piyasara area of Tarakeswar, where the two had an argument which escalated so much that the police had to intervene. On the girl's complaint, the police arrested the young man and produced him in Chandannagar Magistrate Court on the same day.
