Kolkata, 6 February (H.S.): The state government has given a clean chit to saline Ringer Lactate in the maternal death case at Medinipur Medical College. In a report submitted to Calcutta High Court Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, the state has claimed that there was no fault in the saline and laboratory tests also did not find any problem.
At the time of the incident, on the night of January 8 and 9, no senior professor or RMO (resident medical officer) was present at the Medinipur Medical College, making it difficult to monitor all the five C-sections. The case is being investigated by the CID. State Advocate General Kishore Dutta said that there was no fault in the saline, and the affected families have been provided jobs and financial assistance.
The Chief Justice asked the company that manufactured the saline how the incident happened, to which the company replied that the saline got a clean chit after testing in a central lab. The Chief Justice then asked if the state could start making its own saline and how much it would cost.
Mamani Ruidas of Keshpur died during delivery at Medinipur Medical College, for which her family blamed the saline solution. Three other pregnant women were brought to SSKM Hospital Kolkata due to their deteriorating condition.
The state government launched an inquiry into the case and handed over the investigation to the CID on the orders of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The report also revealed that senior doctors who were supposed to be on duty that night were absent, and junior doctors were handling the responsibility. Due to this, the state suspended 13 junior and senior doctors.
