Bhubaneswar, 26 December (H.S.) : Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Korei MLA Sanchita Mohanty passed away at her residence in Bhubaneswar on Friday following a prolonged illness, party sources confirmed. She had been unwell for several months and was undergoing medical treatment.
Mohanty’s death marks the end of an important political chapter in Odisha’s Jajpur district, where she remained a prominent and influential figure in the BJP for decades. She represented the Korei Assembly constituency from 2004 to 2009 and was widely known for her active organisational role and close engagement with constituents during her tenure.
Within the Jajpur unit of the BJP, Mohanty was regarded as one of the party’s senior leaders and played a key role in strengthening the organisation at the grassroots level, particularly during its formative years in the district. Her political career was closely linked to the expansion of the BJP’s base in Jajpur and adjoining areas in the early 2000s.
Even after completing her term as an MLA, Mohanty remained closely associated with the party’s organisational structure. Sources said she continued to participate in party activities and remained accessible to workers and local leaders.
According to party sources, she was undergoing treatment for age-related and other health complications. She breathed her last at her Bhubaneswar residence in the presence of family members.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited her residence and paid his last respects. Expressing condolences, the Chief Minister said he prayed for the peace of the departed soul.
“We paid our last respects to the mortal remains of Sanchita Mohanty, our party’s senior leader and former legislator from Korei. I convey my condolences to the bereaved family and pray to Lord Shri Jagannath for the peace of the departed soul,” Majhi said in a social media post.
