New Delhi, 24 December (H.S.): Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi described the Delhi High Court's granting of bail to former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, sentenced to life imprisonment in the Unnao rape case, as deeply disappointing on Wednesday.

Reposting an X message from women's rights activist Yogita Bhayana, Gandhi questioned whether such treatment of a gang-rape survivor is justified. He wrote that her only fault appears to be raising her voice for justice, adding that when the perpetrator receives bail while the victim endures treatment akin to criminals, it constitutes not justice but profound injustice.

The Delhi High Court granted Sengar conditional bail in the rape case after over six years since the trial court sentenced him to life in 2019. However, he remains incarcerated pending a decision on his bail plea in the victim's father's murder case, where he serves a 10-year term; the hearing is slated for December 28.

Notably, the victim, her mother, and activist Yogita Bhayana staged a protest against the verdict at India Gate late Tuesday night, from where Delhi Police removed them.
