Hosur's growth grounded due to lack of airport

Chennai, 22 December (H.S.) : The industrial city of Hosur in Krishnagiri is facing significant developmental hurdles due to the absence of a dedicated airport, despite a massive influx of investments. While the region has evolved into a major hub for electronics, automobiles, and floriculture, the central government recently declined the demand for an airport under the UDAN scheme.

This decision is reportedly due to a concession agreement with Bangalore International Airport Limited, which restricts the establishment of any new airport within a hundred and fifty kilometer radius until the year 2033.

Local farmers and industrial bodies have expressed deep concern over the logistical challenges and rising costs. Currently, over fifteen tonnes of flowers are transported daily from Hosur to the Bangalore airport, with volumes peaking at sixty tonnes during high demand seasons.

Agricultural producers are forced to spend lakhs of rupees on vehicle rentals and interstate permits to export their goods. Bala Siva Prasad, Director of the Flower Council of India, highlighted that the daily transport of flowers and vegetables involves significant expenses that burden the local economy.

Industrial representatives have urged the state government to expedite land acquisition so that a facility can be ready immediately after the current legal restrictions expire.
