Chennai, 21 December (H.S.) : Persistent dense fog and low visibility conditions in northern India continued to severely impact flight operations at the Chennai International Airport on Sunday.
Airport authorities reported that several scheduled services were disrupted as a direct consequence of the adverse weather conditions prevailing in Delhi and other major northern hubs. Specifically, the thick fog at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in the national capital caused a ripple effect, leading to the cancellation and significant delay of numerous inbound and outbound flights connecting Chennai to the north.
According to data provided by airline operators, as many as sixty eight flights were cancelled across the country on Sunday, with Chennai being among the major southern cities affected. Among the cancelled services were key routes connecting Chennai to Delhi and Patna.
Flight tracking information revealed that prominent airlines, including IndiGo and Air India, had to call off several services such as flight four zero four from Chennai to Delhi and its return leg, flight six eight two eight. Additionally, flights scheduled to arrive in Chennai from Hindon were also listed as cancelled due to the challenging weather environment.
In response to the situation, airport officials and airlines have issued travel advisories urging passengers to verify their flight status before heading to the terminal. An official statement from the airport highlighted that while local weather in Chennai remained manageable, the disruption was primarily due to the severe visibility issues at the destination airports.
Airlines have activated their ground support teams to assist affected travelers with rebooking options and refunds. Passengers have been advised to stay in constant touch with their respective airlines for real time updates as schedules remain subject to further changes depending on weather improvements.
