Guwahati, 10 December (HS): A devastating fire broke out late last night at Sohum Emporia, located in the ABC area of the city, causing extensive damage across the multi-storey commercial complex. The blaze is suspected to have started around midnight.

According to initial reports, six floors of the building were completely gutted in the inferno. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Several goods worth lakhs of rupees were reduced to ashes during the incident.

The building houses multiple branches of the State Bank of India and valuables worth crores belonging to SBI were destroyed in the fire. Around 15 fire tenders were pressed into service, and after an intense operation lasting nearly six hours, the flames were finally brought under control.

Further assessment of the damage and investigation into the cause of the fire are underway.
