Lachit Borphukan is renowned in Indian history for his extraordinary leadership in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat. In this famed naval engagement on the Brahmaputra River near modern-day Guwahati, he led the significantly outnumbered Ahom forces to a decisive victory against the mighty Mughal army.
The historic victory is widely credited with halting the expansion of the Mughal Empire into Assam and the wider Northeast, thereby preserving the unique cultural identity and sovereignty of the region. Lachit Diwas is celebrated annually, especially in Assam, to honor his indomitable spirit and strategic genius.
