RG Kar Case: Junior doctors raise red flag against incomplete probe

Kolkata, 9 January (H.S.): The verdict in the RG Kar Medical College case involving the rape and murder of a young medical student is set to be announced on January 18 by the Sealdah Court. The trial, which began on November 18 last year, has identified civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the lone accused. However, junior doctors and the victim’s family have raised concerns, claiming that others involved in the crime have been left out of the investigation.

On hearing the announcement of the verdict date, junior doctors, led by Aniket Mahato, Debashis Halder, and Asfaq Ullah Nair, organized a rally on Thursday evening. Speaking during the protest, Asfaq Ullah stated, “Justice is not just about punishing one individual. We believe more influential people are involved in this heinous crime. They must be identified and brought to justice.”

Aniket Mahato criticized the investigation, saying, “We had demanded a court-monitored CBI investigation, but despite that, there are glaring gaps. Where is the supplementary charge sheet? Why hasn’t the CFSL or forensic report been properly examined? The investigation appears incomplete, leaving us with no option but to return to the streets.”

While the CBI has proceeded with Sanjay Roy as the main accused, there is dissatisfaction among many, including the victim’s family, who believe the real culprits have been shielded. Some had hoped the supplementary charge sheet would reveal additional names, but none has been filed yet, leading to frustration and renewed protests.
